Patti, a graduating high school student, has been offered a scholarship to California State University, Long Beach, in engineering. However, her father is adamantly opposed to her leaving home until she’s married. The family becomes divided over the issue. Even Patti’s boyfriend doesn’t want her to go away, even though he had encouraged her to apply for the scholarship.
Patti’s younger brother is experiencing his own struggles about his future. He’s a bright young man with excellent hand-eye motor skills, he would like to look into the medical field as a career, but his father already has him pegged for a job installing shade awnings for a local company. If Patti doesn’t succeed, she dies a little today.
